Frantisek Simandl

Frantisek Simandl Studied with: Josef Hrabé from 1855 to 1862 at the Prague Conservatory.

Played for: Vienna Imperial Opera. Principal bass at Bayreuth.

Compositions: New Method for the Double Bass, 30 Etudes, Gradus ad Parnassum, concertos, solos.

Comment: Professor of Double Bass at the Vienna Conservatory from 1869 until 1910. Individuals who had the opportunity to hear both Bottesini and Simandl stated that Simandl had the edge when it came to strength and quality of tone as well as for technique.

Instrument: Simandl played a Maggini. The instrument to the left is a Maggini, but not Simandl's.
